In July 2018, SOHI began raising funds for the “I Was Thirsty…” campaign. a sustainable initiative to provide desperately needed Clean Water, Latrines, and Sanitation & Health Training for 41 schools in the community. Appalling conditions force student to use latrines collapsing into their pits or use no latrine at all. The children drink disease and parasite infested pond/river water because there is no other choice. That’s 15,000+ kids per year for the next 20 to 30 years, who will be empowered by dramatically improved health and learning opportunities.
God has provided the means to make this monumental project a reality through our compassionate donors. More than 90% of the $366,000 needed complete these projects has been receive so far. According to current planning (which may change somewhat as construction proceeds), these funds will provide the following to the schools:
- 54 latrine buildings with girl’s buildings having 4 stalls and the boys’ having 3 stalls plus urinal. They will be long-lasing brick construction with a stucco-type coating inside and out.
- Roof rain collection systems (rain gutters) and 69 10,000L storage tanks.
Sanitation and health training for approximately 200 educators who will pass it on to studens as part of on-going curriculum.
The community is ecstatic and oh so thankful! For those of you that have contributed we want you to see that your funds are accomplishing work. Following is a brief summary of the scope and progress photos to date from the four first schools.
Our goal is to complete all 41 schools in about 18 months. We still lack about $35,000 to complete the entire project. Please consider a 2019 gift to help us over the top.
